  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking dish.
  2. In a small bowl, stir together the chopped dates and baking soda. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

  15. Remove from the heat and whisk in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until the icing is smooth.

  17. Pour the icing over the warm cake, spreading it out evenly.
